The Procedure
During the procedure, the treated area will freeze and turn white. As the area thaws, it will flush and become red, and a weal (swelling) will develop. Within 2 to 4 hours after freezing, the weal may progress to a blister, which can persist for 3 to 5 days before forming a scab. This scab will naturally fall off within 1 to 2 weeks.
Depending on the severity of the freeze and the size of the treated area, a new scab may form, and the healing cycle may repeat. Complete healing typically occurs within 4 weeks, again depending on the depth of the freeze and tissue involvement.
After the initial healing, the treated area may appear lighter than the surrounding skin due to the loss of melanocytes. Melanocytes, which produce skin pigment, are highly sensitive to cold and can be destroyed at temperatures of -5 degrees Celsius and below.
