Summer Sun

I thought I would remind you of the importance of using sunscreen, particularly as we have just had our first few ‘sunbathing’ days of the year. Whilst we all know about protecting our skin, I am still tempted to get a tan and sit baking in the sun to achieve my goal – but now I am ‘getting on’, I really do regret the years of lying in the sun for hours on end just to get temporary colour. While it is important to get some sun exposure during off-peak hours for health reasons, you can still achieve a golden tan while preserving the long term health & beauty of your skin. All skin tones are vulnerable to sun damage from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. So applying sunscreen at the start of your day should be as automatic as combing your hair. To provide colour to pale skin, try tinted moisturisers or self tanning lotion.

Avoid going out without sunscreen or a hat during the peak hours of 10AM to 3PM, because in addition to the risk of skin cancer, UV radiation (whether from the sun or from a sunbed) can also cause the following:
